The project for this historic building, in the city center, consists of three different moments: restoring, reconstructing and extending the existing ruin. In this process, the 900 sq. meters romantic panoramic garden, currently neglected, will be brought to light.


Our approach started from a careful reading of existing qualities and specificity, in order to preserve and use them as sparks for the project. The main building will restore its former use: housing. The addition of a new story seeks to consolidate its eastern façade, in continuity with the neighbor building, while increasing density. The new structure will be made out of timber, and the building will be cladded in azulejos and light grey render. The new studio-apartment defines two areas in the garden: a courtyard for those who live here, served by a private garden  and a romantic garden as the outside space of the studio-apartment. Its form relates to the scale of these two outdoor areas, creating a simple yet surprising internal space for events, recalling tradition but being modern at the same time.


The project searches for a new unity, where old and new are not read in contrast but rather as the merging of preexisting qualities and new sober and quite additions. New will not be immediately perceived as new; old will be restored without loosing its old glamour; new and old will no longer be new and old, only a careful eye will have the pleasure to discover.
